Money Makers & Savers

If you're a stay at home mom like me I'm sure you've struggled with ideas
on how to bring in some extra cash into the household. It's hard living on one
income and if we could figure out a way to bring in a couple more dollars
while staying at home with our kids, that would be awesome right?

I'm a huge fan of these sites that save or earn you money.
It's usually a couple dollars here and there, but it adds up.
And you don't really have to get off your couch. And most of them give
referral bonuses for getting your friends on board. (Do you see where this is going?)

If you're interested in any of these following sites, please sign up through my links
so I can get the credit. I'm not ashamed to ask! Lol

I do recommend these though, this post isn't purely for my benefit only.
These are sites that I have legitimately earned or saved some cash from and I
figured you'd probably like to get in on this action!

What it is: Swagbucks is an online reward system where you earn points from doing various tasks. From searching the web to signing up for sites to watching 30-second advertisements, the amount of points earned can be cashed in for rewards.

How its working for me: I have earned a lot from Swagbucks but I've been a member for a while. Last year I earned $75 worth of Amazon gift cards that I used towards my Christmas shopping, and that was all without any referrals under me. If I were to have people sign up under me, I would be collecting points even faster.

How to get the most out of it: To get the most out of Swagbucks, make sure you download the toolbar and use the built in search engine to do your internet searches. You will randomly score SBs in various amounts from searching the web. Commit some time each day to do some Swagbucking (not an official term). There are soo many different ways to earn SBs. My personal favorite is the surveys (be patient, they fill up fast and most will deny you after a couple questions but the ones that let you through are usually high valued!) Also, add this page on Facebook. They offer tips daily for easy SB earnings!

What it is: Ibotta is a free mobile app for grocery shoppers that offers a fun way to get cash back from your every day shopping. Just answer a couple consumer survey type questions to claim your offers on the products you choose. After purchasing those specific products from the grocery store, you can redeem your earnings by scanning your store receipt and scanning the bar code on the product. Once Ibotta verifies the purchase, the money is yours! Link to your PayPal account to cash in.

How its working for me: I'm still very new to Ibotta. I literally used it for the first time last week but man have I been missing out! I wish I would've known about this earlier! My first grocery trip I was able to cash in $14.50. Well...$10 of that was a bonus for being a new customer but still! That's almost $15 I didn't have before and it took me almost no effort to earn!

How to get the most out of it: You gotta give up the brand loyalty if you're gonna use this app. Only certain products are offered (it changes all the time) and I would take advantage of as much of them as you can. There are also multiple bonuses you can complete for extra earnings! You must sign up through my link to get the $10 Share The Love Bonus! But don't sign up unless you know you're going shopping soon. You get the $10 for redeeming 5 offers within your first 2 weeks.

What it is: Capital One 360 is an FDIC insured online bank. They offer checking, savings, teen and even kid's savings accounts that you can access anytime.

How its working for me: You've heard about all my accounts for different reasons. Well I am excited most about the Capital One 360 account I recently signed up for to save our "fun money". I signed up during a special promotion and if I make 2 more transactions to or from my acct within 45 days of signing up, they'll give me a $100 bonus! Again, $100 towards our Disneyland fund that I didn't have to work for.

How to get the most out of it: Sign up through my link to have a chance at the Refer-a-Friend bonus. Right now they are offering $50 if you open a checking account and $25 for savings, kids or teen account. You must meet the qualifications to get the bonus. So be prepared before you open it. Like I mentioned before, my bonus will come when I've made a total of 5 transactions within my first 45 days. I think for a savings account you'll get your bonus if you open your account with at least $250.

What it is: Zulily is a members-only daily deals type website. New deals are announced every day and are only open for a couple days before they expire. Zulily works directly with different brands to offer us the best deals available. They offer a lot of kids/baby/mom products but also have a section for Home and Women products. Clothes, jewelry, kitchen stuff, home decor, the products they offer always vary so there is something for everyone.

How its working for me: I am an official Zulily addict. It is very very easy to get sucked in to its greatness and even harder to resist taking advantage of their amazing deals. But in the long run, I am saving money. I recently bought part of the Preschool Prep curriculum for my 3 year old son. The package I got goes for $225 retail, I got it for $99.99 on Zulily! This is pretty well-known curriculum too and I have been lusting after it for a while.

How to get the most out of it: Zulily will give you $15 credit for every friend you refer. But since this is mostly a money saver I recommend double checking their "sales" on other sites before you purchase. Sometimes you can get an amazing deal, sometimes not so much. I don't think buying clothes from here is worth it because they're still more pricey than catching sales at Carters or Gymboree. They make it ridiculously easy to buy things off their app so practice self-control! :) But check their sales every day to find the good stuff and get it early before it sells out. I'll be keeping an eye out for Christmas gifts.

How to sign up: http://www.zulily.com/invite/keichelberger981

What it is: Ebates is a way to get cash back from your online purchases. Stores offer Ebates commission for sending consumers their way. Ebates uses that commission to reward us.

How its working for me: I do TONS of online shopping since I'm out here in the middle of nowhere! I've earned almost $18 back from Ebates just from making my usual online purchases.

How to get the most out of it: Not all sites are linked with Ebates so to make sure you get your earnings, download the Ebates Add-on for the toolbar of your browser. If you are at an Ebates-friendly website, it will notify you so you can make sure you get the credit. Its hard to remember Ebates when you're focused on shopping so I've found this to be very helpful! Sign up through my link to get a $5 bonus after your first Ebates-friendly purchase. Ps. Remember that Shakeology I wrote about a few days ago? Get 5% back on your Beachbody purchases!

I'm going to keep track of my earnings from these sites for the month of August.
I'll let you guys know how I do!
If you have any questions about anything, don't hesitate to ask.
Help me help you! :)

Update: Our 7 Bank Accounts

A few months ago, I wrote this piece on the concept of
seven separate bank accounts to manage your family's finances.

I gave it a shot and have been using this system since then and
I want to update you to let you know how its going.

I highly recommend having multiple accounts, however 7
seemed to be too much for us. Our most difficult part was
distinguishing Dad's money from Mom's money, especially
when we went places together. It was a lot easier when he
was deployed. So this is what we have come up with:

1. Fun Money Account
2. Car Savings Account
3. Emergency Money Account
4. Expected Expenses Account
5. Family Account

I have gotten into the habit of depositing $20 each paycheck to
accounts 1-4. Seriously, $80 is not much and we don't miss it
yet our 4 savings accounts are growing.

With our Family Account we do a lot of communicating to make
sure we are spending within our limits. After our bills are paid each
month, we then calculate our budgeted gas, groceries, and Andrew's
weekly haircuts (gotta love the military!). Whatever left over is our
allotted spending money for the rest of that paycheck.

I still highly recommend mint.com for free online money management.
I use it daily.

I have 2 of our accounts with Ally which is an online high-yield savings account
and I'm REALLY pleased with them. Especially since it takes 3 days to transfer
money between accounts which makes it harder to touch!

I also recently signed up (for free) with Captial One 360 for our Fun Money
account. They offer personal and refer-a-friend bonuses which is just a little
extra money for our savings!

Couponing My Way

I so wish I was an amazing couponer. I love watching those shows.
I even know some people who are super good at it and save tons of money.

I don't know why I don't understand it.

I love my coupons, I love my sales, I even hosted a couponing class in my home by
some lady who knows the ins and outs of it all. Nope, still don't get it.

But even though I'm not entirely savvy in it all, I still try to use coupons as much as I can.

My Sources

1) Sunday paper coupons - I actually have my mom save them from her paper every week because she doesn't use them and I'm too cheap to pay for a paper!!!

2) In Store coupons - the ones you find strategically placed near products every once in a while. At least our commissary does this. I end up ripping quite a few off if I see something good!

3) Coupons.com - A great source but you have to have a printer.

4) Commissary Rewards Card - It's kind of a process but its worth it some times! I believe this is available at all commys now, so if you haven't gotten one yet, sign up!

My Routine

I shop for our groceries weekly around here. I try to go on Saturdays. I usually spend Friday or early Saturday making my list and going through my coupons. I have a little zipper pencil pouch in my HMB that I keep my clipped coupons in. I go through these, scour coupons.com for anything I might use, and go to the commissary site to see what coupons are available there.

I try to plan my menu around coupons as much as possible. After I plan my meals, I write out my list and I put a star next to anything I have coupons for. It helps me keep track. I usually end up saving $10-$15 a trip, which isn't a lot compared to other people, but its enough to make me feel good! That also translates to $40-$60 a month just by doing a little bit of planning before I go to the store.

Using Your Commissary Rewards Card

The thing about this is, its not your typical store card. I'm not even sure what the "rewards" are other than the coupons you get. Once your card is registered, you load electronic coupons to it online before your shopping trip. When you check out, make sure you hand over your card for them to scan so your coupons are applied. When I shopped yesterday, they had some pretty good offers like $1 off Luvs diapers and $1 off Pur water filter, which were both on my list already!

Here's my receipt from yesterday...

If you have any more good couponing tips, please share! I'm always eager to learn more :)

The Lucky 7

I first read this blog a few months ago
and it really made sense to me.

Yes, SEVEN bank accounts.

At first I was like "That can't be good for business."
But as I read on, I realized there really isn't any kind
of penalty for having multiple accounts open.

Think of it like filing your money the way you file
your paperwork. Each file has its own purpose.
Each account has its own purpose.

I told hubby about the idea and he was on board.
We will move a certain amount into each account
every paycheck, depending on how we budget them.

We've decided to break ours down this way....
1. Husband's Acct
(Lunches, haircuts, internet in Japan, spending money)
2. Wife's Acct
(Grocery shopping, babysitting, gas, care packages, spending money)
3. Emergency
(Try really really hard not to touch this, ever!)
4. New Car Savings
(We opened a high-yield online savings account at Ally for this)
5. Family Savings
(For expected expenses: tires for the car, dental visits, etc)
6. Fun Money
(For vacations, trips, fun things we want to do with the kids)
7. Family Checking
(The hub of the whole ordeal)

With our money being "out of sight, out of mind" I
expect us to save a lot more than we currently do.

Even if we start by putting $10 in each account,
its better than nothing!

Since its tax time and most people are getting their
refunds back, I thought it would be a good time to
share this information. It is definitely a different
approach to saving, but could possibly be very effective!

Also, if you haven't signed up for mint.com yet,
I highly recommend it.

Especially if you open a million different accounts.
Mint.com will keep them all in one spot to make it easy!

Defeat the Paper Clutter

Who's ready for this one?

If you're a person, you probably have piles
and piles and piles and piles
of random paper clutter all over your house.

You might have a good idea of what is where,
but is that really where it belongs?
Doubt it!

About a year ago I got to researching the
best way to organize and maintain the paper
clutter in my house. It took a good day's worth
of organizing but I felt so relieved after.

It's about that time again.

Find a System!

I keep all of my important paperwork in this
cheap little box I got at Walmart.

One of my favorite tips from my research
last year was to keep file folders for each month,
instead of categorized by company or subject.

At the beginning of each month, I clear out that file
and start adding my new bills/papers to it as it comes.

Find a strategy that works for you, something
you can keep up with or your paper clutter will
come back for you!!!

What to keep? What to toss?

The first step to decluttering is to go through
the entire house and gather every piece of loose paper
you can find. This includes mail stuck in junk drawers,
receipts, flyers, school work, bills, menus, everything.

Keep: Birth certificates, health records, insurance policies,
passports, deeds, titles, warranty receipts, tax records for the
past 7 years, will, citizenship papers, bills for the past year,
bank statements for the past year, investment papers for the past
year, loans, anything else you think you should probably hold on to.

Organize!

Throw away the trash!

Sort your "keep" pile into their own categories depending
on how your file folder is set up.

Jot down numbers off of flyers and toss them.
Clip what you want to keep out of newspapers
or magazines and toss those.

Don't quit until every piece of paper is taken care of.

Rejoice!

You will feel so much better when it's done.
And if you have found a good system, the
next time you do this will be a lot easier!

so please let me know if any of the links
do not work, enjoy!

Snowball Your Debt

I am, by no means, an expert at money.
I warned you from the start, I'm not an expert in anything.
I just know what works for me and want to share with you!

While hubby is deployed, I have a goal to pay off our credit card debt.
I've seen this snowball method mentioned here and there
and decided I would give it a try.

I really like it.
Its kind of fun.
lol

There are two ways you could do it:

Pay off your highest percentage rate first.
{Most effective option for your money}

Pay off your lowest balance first.
{Most rewarding and motivating option}

I chose to go with the highest percentage rate first since I'm
already pretty motivated and I want to do what's best for my money.

I created a chart similar to this one to keep track.
Note: This is not my actual financial information, I just made it as an example!
I listed the cards from highest interest rate to lowest interest rate.
This will be the order in which I pay them off.

After you make your chart, HIDE YOUR CARDS!!!
Cut them up.
Burn them.
Put them in a safe.
Put them somewhere where you will NOT have easy access to them.
This will not be effective if you continue using your cards in the process.

Ok, now that you don't have any cards to use, this is how you pay them off...
Say you have $400/mo to dedicate towards your cards.
Pay ONLY the minimum payment on all the cards except the one you are paying off.

Using the example above:
Pay Capital One: $50
Pay Target: $15
Pay Chase: $40
and you have $295 left to pay Visa.

Continue making payments this way until Visa is paid off.
Then snowball it to the next card:
Pay Target: $15
Pay Chase: $40
and you have $345 left to pay Capital One.

And so on and so forth until you have reached financial freedom.

Sounds good right?

I love using mint.com to keep track of my expenses.
I just thought I'd throw that out there.
It feels a little risky at first, putting all your financial info into one website.
But I know this website is highly recommended and secure.

I hope this helps at least one person out there :)
